The 2015 Pan American Games will officially kick off one year from today.
The PanAm Games are the third largest international sporting event in the world, and have been held every four years since the first games in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1951. In 1999, the Parapan American Games was first held in Mexico City and has run since then along with the PanAm Games. The Games have only been held in Canada twice before, and both times it was in Winnipeg, so it’s really exciting that our home city is getting the honour this time around!
The city went wild back in 2009 when it was announced we would be hosting the Games and the 7,000 athletes competing in them, and time has flown by since then to now, where we’re only a year away! Toronto hasn’t actually hosted an international sporting event like this since 1930 with the British Empire Games - so this is pretty exciting stuff. The city will be buzzing this weekend with activities celebrating with one-year countdown.
You can head down to Nathan Phillips Square on July 11 and 12 for the One Year To Go party. The event is free, fully accessible, and there will be lots of activities going on over the course of the two days. Here’s a few of the events we recommend checking out:
1) Soaring Heights Trampoline Show - July 11 @ 12:30pm
See trampoline champions Karen Cockburn, Samantha Sendel and Jason Burnett fly high and demonstrate a few trampoline stunts you wish you could do - just don’t try it at home! Rosie MacLennan, who won the sole gold medal for Canada at the 2013 Olympic Games in London, will also be there for a meet and greet.
2) Walk Off The Earth - July 11 @ 10:00pm
This Canadian group has blown up over the course of the last few years after their infamous YouTube video of Gotye’s song Somebody That I Used to Know went viral. Since then they’ve had other hit songs such as Red Hands that have made them one of the more well known Canadian sensations. This is definitely a show you can’t miss!
3) CIBC Human Foosball - July 12 @ 2:30pm
From the sounds of it, this is going to be one very interesting event. Canadian athletes and celebrities will be participating (and you too!) in a life-size game of foosball. Pretty self explanatory and we can’t wait to see how it pans out!
4) CIBC Art Battle - July 12 @ 5:50pm
Ever been to an Art Battle? Competitors have to paint a piece in front of a live audience in a limited amount of time, and after each round the audience votes and a winner is crowned. It’s always fun to see what the different painters come up with and see how they work. Art Battles occur across Canada all year round but we’re lucky enough to have one happening at the party this weekend!
You can check out the full schedule of events to make sure you don’t miss out, as these are just a few of the highlights. It’s going to be an exciting year as Toronto prepares to host this amazing event, so come celebrate this milestone with the rest of the city this weekend!
